A prequel and a sequel —
The following excerpt from my 2025 introduction to the book,  White Pines, tells how that book was inspired by the dream recounted in this booklet.  This booklet can be seen as a “prequel” to that much longer book. 

“Having been taught the importance of bringing such a dream to life in the waking world, I made an illustrated booklet {this booklet} about the dream. For the booklet’s cover I chose one of my favorite photos, one of a white pine. I soon understood this choice—White Pine is one of the relatives I had met in the dream, one with whom I have had a life-long relationship.” 

Through that photo on the cover of this booklet  White Pine kept “talking” to me, insisting I tell the story of our lifelong friendship.  So I began to write and to photograph.  I “translated” into photographs many of the stories that white pines themselves tell.  White Pine is co-author of the larger book, White Pines, the “sequel” to this booklet.  As I worked on the White Pines book, I spoke of white pine trees with many people.  A lot of them spontaneously told me their own white pine stories.  Twenty-two of those stories form the second half of that book.
